The Abuse of Comedy

On September 1st 2020, British viral comedian James Veitch was outed in The Hollywood Reporter as having 12 cases of abuse and/or rape against him from his time studying at Sarah Lawrence College, New York in 2008. By the next day, he had been dropped by Conan O'Brien's production company Team Coco, his 30,000,000 Ted Talk views removed, edited out of an HBO Max panel show, Hachette Publishing reneged on his book deal, WME Entertainment removed him from their agency and his new comedy special disappeared. Receiving cursory newspaper coverage, the industry that snapped up an unfamous comedian like hot treasure washed their hands of him. Put James Veitch into youtube and there are zero results on the assault, no news stories, no media attention. He still has 814,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel. 50,000 on his verified instagram. 261,000 Facebook Followers. But what caused this culture? Welcome to the Abuse of Comedy.
